Day 6 - Travel to Bogota


We said a sad goodbye to the San Carlos Lodge in Periera.  While waiting for the bus to collect us I had a walk around the grounds and saw lots of birds and also a Tapir.  At first I thought it was a small pig running along the perimeter fence.  It was very quick so I only managed to get a photo of its head.

We flew to Bogota, the 3rd highest capital city in South America after La Paz and Quito and 4th highest in the world (with Thimphu, Bhutan taking 3rd place).  It is 2644m above sea level so considerably cooler than Medellin and Periera.


We were taken to our hotel where we will spend the next 2 nights.  It was pouring with rain so we decided to have a rest before going out to explore the area.  
On the way to the hotel we were told that there is no metro system in Bogota but there is a network of buses that run in their own lanes and have designated stops which are more like covered tram stops.  They are not affected by the traffic jams so move people about quickly.  We were surprised to see 3 compartment "bendy" buses.

It was dark when the rain stopped (temporarily) so we went for a walk in the area around the hotel which is near Parque 93 in the Chico region to the north of the city.  There are loads of restaurants around and we found an Italian and had a nice meal.  It did start raining again so we came back to the hotel.  We will see more of the city during a tour tomorrow morning and we have been told that the weather is likely to be drier earlier in the day.

Neither of us could sleep last night.   My feet were hurting from the difficult walk and the boat was rocking about so much that I thought I was going to fall out of bed.   Eventually I got up and made my way to the bathroom and looked out.   The starry sky was amazing.   I could see the Plough so clearly up above and it looked so much nearer that when we see it at home.   Paul took a look and then we went out of our cabin and saw the other side of the boat.   We saw more stars than we have ever seen and also saw the milky way very clearly.   This is because we are close to the equator and there was no light pollution and no moon.   We watched this for some time before going back to bed where we did eventually get to sleep.  We thought it would easily photograph but it didn't. Day 22 - Galapagos - Espanola Island

The boat started sailing towards Espanola Island at midnight.   This took about 5 hours and it was another night of being thrown about – getting used to it now.   We had breakfast at 7 followed by a walk along the beach at Gardner Bay, Espanola.   We could see (and hear) a colony of sea lions further along the beach.   We first saw some Mocking Birds and a Hermit Crab.   Then we came across a turtle nest.   It was a big hollow in the sand but was probably made about 3 nights ago as all tracks to it had been covered.   There were some more recent nests further down.   Turtles lay about 100 eggs but only 1 or 2 of these survive to adulthood.   Nearby was a colourful Lava Lizard which is only seen on Espanola Island. Day 15 - Bellavista Cloud Forest - Day 2

We were up and ready for our 6.30 morning hike which was really just a walk around the lodge area to see the creatures as they were waking up.  Fortunately the rain had stopped and it was a lovely morning. We saw a lot of birds and a Tayra, which is from the weasel family.
